一、定義法
在托福的文章里，有時(shí)會有定義的方法來對某個生僻的單詞或短語進(jìn)行定義。一些明顯的標(biāo)記詞匯就會被使用到，比如or, means, refers to, is ,is called, is defined as, which is 等等。下面我們通過例子，來猜測某些生詞的意義。
A court interpreter is anyone who interpr in a civil or criminal court proceeding for a witness or defendant who speaks or understands little or no English.
這個句子是通過“is”對 “court interpreter” 進(jìn)行定義，我們通過anyone who….就可以對court interpreter 有個清晰的定義。

二、近/反義詞法
表示轉(zhuǎn)折和讓步的連接詞 (如however, on the other hand, despite, in spite of,等)在托福閱讀里可以作為一些猜生詞的工具。看下面例子
In spite of simplicity, the national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact.
我們現(xiàn)在猜測primitive的意思，首先in spite of 表示讓步，所以simplicity 應(yīng)當(dāng)與 no…primitive 意思相反，所以我們可以得出 primitive = simplicity

三.舉例猜測詞義

After breakfast, many people go to church; but the children will be playing with their new toys, and the mother will probably be preparing the Christmas dinner. This includes poultry for the main course (e.g. chicken, turkey, duck, goose), salads, breads, and vegetable, and features a variety of desserts, for example, pies, puddings, and ice cream.

“chicken, turkey, duck, goose”同屬“poultry：家禽”。

例詞：biology（生物學(xué)）、biosphere（生態(tài)圈）、biography（傳記）

2. de- 向下/否定

例詞：devalue（貶值）、demolition（拆除）、dehumanize（非人化）

3. geo- 地球

4. photo- 光線/照片
